Smith's Far Code

Post by kendall » Thu Sep 12, 2019 12:56 am

Hello everyone,

I have a 1975 spider and found this box on the passenger side panel above the map pocket. It says Smith's 274 Far Code 1101. The only hits that come up on google are for jaguar forums where they say it's a door buzzer.

Is this a door buzzer in the Fiat as well? The wiring diagram really does not show that many wires going to the door buzzer so I'm not sure what I've got.

Thanks for the info if you have any.

It’s a Seatbelt Interlock logic box - more than just a buzzer - usually fitted to British classics (Jaguar, Jensen, Triumph etc). No idea how it ended up on your spider.... but I did find one referenced as a part for a 128 ....

Hm, this car just gets stranger and stranger. I took a look at the 128 wiring diagrams and I did find one that mentioned that early 1975 models had the Smith system used, but no other notes. I suppose the same was true for the 124. The interlock has already been disengaged, so I'm not worried about it, but it would be nice to find out how it works if something did come up.

They were very much added on after assembly and documented as such. It may be this was a replacement for a broken one of another type - the failure rate in these interlock systems was high.

Here is the Smiths on my '74 124 Spider. The wiring for it was present on the diagram, and it was easy to defeat by closing the circuits that go to the seat sensors.

Thanks for the replies. That was going to be my next question, do these show up on the wiring diagrams at all. I just found it on the coupe and TC 1974 diagrams. It's number 189 if anyone cares. I assume it was wired the same way. At least now I can learn how to pull it out if I want to.

If you look in the library - I think there's an official fiat publication on them. .... and if you look in the service letters, an official fiat publication on how to disable them :)
