It can be very tricky to get the crank nut off without drama, especially with a u-joint. Protect the surrounding bodywork well, perhaps by taping some corrugated cardboard to bits the socket could hit if it goes wild on you.

Removing the hood really isn’t that hard (mark the hinges) and then you can even line up the marks from the front (vs the cambix marks on the back!)

--Neil, here is an alternative to using an impact gun to remove the crank pulley nut/bolt. This simple tool is made with a short piece of 1" angle iron (available at your local hardware store) . The angle iron is drilled to match the lower holes in your flywheel inspection plate, and a slot cut to accept a flat blade screwdriver or equivalent tool, to insert into one of the flywheel ring-gear teeth. Simple to make....simple to use.

--With this tool installed, place the car in gear, handbrake on, and use an appropriate breaker-bar to remove your crankshaft pulley. A 1 1/2" socket will do nicely. Replacing the nut is the opposite. Be sure to torque correctly.

Thanks, Jim! My metal crafting is sketchy at best, but I'm hanging on to the pic as a "next step".

Found an interesting series of posts on the other site from back in the oughts. Several folks mentioned using a chain wrench and extensions, so I'm trying that this week. May also hit the nut with a little dry heat (heat gun, not flame), shielding the belt of course. Parts all arrived late last week, looking forward to getting the car back on the street (though it's been cloudy/raining here for what feels like weeks...).

Just did the timing belt on my 80. I used a chain wrench to hold the pulley, along with a 1/2 inch breaker bar with a 24 inch water pipe extension. Came off pretty easy. Didn't want to try my impact with the lack of a straight shot at the nut. Just my experience.

I Recently did the same thing as Guilly using chain wrench with great success. The one thing I did different however was to fasten the chain wrench to the smaller un-used v-belt pulley on the front damper in order to avoid damage to v-belt groove that is used with the water pump/alternator belt.

Yup....just tried the chain wrench/extender and it popped the crank nut loose with just a smidge of effort (I will readily admit to using a 5' extender on the breaker bar/nut....what was that Archimedes said? :D ). All is well on that score. Planning a re-torque to 101ft/lbs, with blue threadlock for insurance.

Belt tensioner....hmmm. If I push back the tensioner pulley, tighten the 17mm bolt down, remove the belt, then loosen/remove the 17mm bolt (to change the tensioner pulley) will I have springs and assorted little bits flying about? After that, looks to be pretty straight forward. I'll also make sure the dizzy is pointing at #4 before I pull the belt....
