Upper and lower ball joints the same?

Post by friedman » Thu Aug 08, 2019 1:25 pm

Are the 124 Spider upper and lower front A-arm ball joints the same? I ask because I have two new ones in boxes and the label does not indicate upper or lower. The parts book gives them separate part numbers.

They are definitely not the same. I just replaced a set of uppers and lowers on my 82 Spider.

Not the same, but unfortunately the bolt pattern is the same, so people have installed uppers in the lower location just to have them fail in no time.
The uppers usually have a domed backside.

Some years ago Federal Mogul bought the TRW front end parts business and immediately re-boxed existing stock in Moog packaging though they continued to use the TRW p/n's. Parts and boxes sometimes get mixed up in re-boxing.

Yes they do, I've got a Moog box with the right part number and it's not even a Fiat ball joint.

I have a ball joint bag with "made in Japan" sticker on top of one that ways 'made in China".
