Early radio blanking plate

Post by bartigue » Mon Jul 29, 2019 9:14 pm

Would anyone have a picture of the blanking plate that fit over the radio "hole" on the early cars? I've never seen one. I have an early console (69) that has been uncut and it has two small slots next to the radio knob holes. I assume these are for the blanking plate retaining tabs. The only image I can find it is simply black.

Interesting (to me at least!) is the early microfilm, up through 1970, show the radio and center console as a single piece, superseded in 1970 by two pieces. I do not think it was ever made as a single unit, probably just sold pre-screwed together.

Found it - looks like the same mesh material they used in the speaker hole, with a chrome surround.

Anyone have one? :)

It's not mesh, it's striped just like the ashtrays. I have one somewhere, but will be a few days before I can get to it.

Csaba nailed it! It's just like the ash tray lid. Two tabs on each end where they fit into the upper console. I also may have one, but it would be in the garage attic and it's way too hot to look now. I know I have an old dash up there.

I was right about one thing, it was really hot in the garage attic 😉. Unfortunately that's the only thing I found up there, other than the center console, but no radio console. I'll look again when it cools off.

Mike don’t abuse yourself seeking it out. I was curious and found the answer in the old brochures

Brad, I never put a radio in my '73 spider, so I know the blanking plate is in the radio console. If I run across it I'll let you know.
