124 speedometer drive?

Post by fiat850 » Mon Aug 05, 2019 2:44 am

Found this mixed in with some random 850 parts I bought recently, it's definitely not for an 850. Can anyone help me verify if this a 124 speedometer drive unit? It has a green splash of paint on the end, which is sometimes used to denote a specific drive ratio/gearing (but I don't know which ratio that is).

Look familiar to anyone?

Looks like one but the two I have both have the fiat part number and name stamped on them.

Sure looks like the 124 speedometer drive. Mine (still in the car) came with the optional 5 cent service upgrade:

That's how I vaguely remember them being as well, but this one has no cast-in numbers/letters anywhere on it (hence, my inquiry here). Now that I see exactly where yours has the cast-in text on it, I'll have to look closer at mine in that area.

One thing I've noticed looking at the photos posted here, is that the cable-attachment pod on mine is on the opposite side of the main "vertical" gear shaft than yours. Comparing my first photo above to your photo, mine has the cable pod on the "left" side, while yours is on the "right".

Aha! I think I've got it! :D

Seeing how my cable-drive pod is on the opposite side as compared to the 124 drives posted here, I surmised this would rotate the speedo cable in the opposite direction as well. Likely for a rear-engined set-up, but not an 850 (or X1/9). Then I remembered this:

Fiat 600D transaxle speedo drive! :ugeek:
