The car does roll freely in neutral. Does not roll freely in 5th, 1st or any other gear.

Sounds like the transmission might be locked up.

What is the history? Was the car running and driving before this happened?
Any trauma to the car?

Did you get into the transmission at all?

I would not think the car would roll freely when not in neutral... it has to turn the engine over.

Andy, not sure why you would think the transmission would be locked up. It does roll freely in neutral (seems like that would be normal) and does not roll freely in any gear (also seems normal). Just trying to understand.

No trauma to the car, haven't dug into the transmission. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do that and certainly don't want to put any more money into the car. Sort of at a crossroads at this point.

Thanks

Is the clutch disc sticking to the flywheel/pressure plate, spinning the input shaft with it?
Try starting in gear with the clutch pushed in; it may want to jump, be careful!

In 5th it is not difficult to push a car. It will turn the engine, I use this method to align timing marks when installing a distributor.
Just coming at this from a different direction.

If the car won't move in fifth then something is locking up.
Simply putting the car in gear causing the engine to die makes no sense to me.

Maybe a video of it happening so we can see and hear what is happening.

When I said it "will not roll freely in gear", I meant that, yes I can roll the car, but obviously not as freely as when in neutral.

I'll have to work on my video uploading skills later this week.

Thanks

I've been bouncing back and forth between mirafiori and another Fiat forum for help and advice.

Today I removed the last piece of the smog assy. (a switch located at the clutch pedal), and that seems to have made the difference.

In any case, the car is finally street worthy.
It seems that after warms up a bit and the idle stabilizes, the problem mostly disappears. It stills shows up intermittently on a drive.
I can tell that it isn't correct when I accelerate, still has a stumble or missing a bit (not as if the clutch is slipping). At other times, no problem at all, runs and accelerates smoothly, so some intermittent issue is still there, but I'm not afraid to drive it anywhere.

Maybe it will correct itself at some point or remain the same, either way I'm mostly happy and certainly appreciate all of the help offered here!

Thanks again
Jeff

Check for air leaks and cracked hoses all around the manifold and carburetor, they contribute to pops and missing and poor performance. Drive it a while (10-15m) and pull the plugs, set the timing and mixture.

Good to Hear Jeff!

I am not familiar with a switch on the clutch. But then I am not very familiar with any of the 1800 models.

Was a good head scratcher that's for sure.
