Been dealing with this flared X on Xweb but thought I would bring you guys up to date. I got 8X13 wheels to fill the flares with new BFG TAs in 205/6013. All the mechanical components came out of my red X that got totaled. Since I have no real budget for paint, for now this may end up being stealth flat black.

Nice wheels 8-)
I think you need a little more buffing out around the rear wheel surround tho ;)

--Carl, you are insane..... I love it!

--How about a refresher on the plan for this project? I assume, crazy, outrageous street car? Does it get a passenger seat? Engine modifications?

--The meaty look of those wheels and tires really make that project!! Well done!

The intent is just for an in your face local sprinter. Just something to get in a good 30 minutes of buzz time on some nice local roads. I like the race car on the street look and this will be a sheep in wolf's clothing for now. The motor was an IT race motor with a balanced bottom end but stock pistons and head. Currently has a header and larger 34 DMTR carb. I plan to put dual 40 IDFs on it. This is the motor out of my red X and I had dual DCOEs on it in that iteration.

Started up the car last week and got a horrible noise when I stepped on the clutch pedal. Replaced the throw out bearing but got the same noise. Several guys on the Xweb posted that I should check the axial play on the crank as they think the thrust bearings fell out and they may be right since I have a bit more than 2mm of play....oil pan comes out today. I have to trim the front wheel flares as the tires hit both the leading and trailing edge of the flares....I can only turn the steering wheel a few degrees! This is taking longer than I expected but what project doesn't. The 75 spider just waits patiently in the driveway.

The interior will be identical to the red X with two seats and bed liner on the floor. Those two shiny strips of metal on the passenger side are some pieces of duct work metal to hide the two long holes where the seat track mounts had rusted out totally. Just there to keep stuff falling on the floor. I cut out the floor from the red X and it will go in there.

The build will actually be a tad wilder as I have a FAZA snorkel to put on the engine cover if I have enough guts to drive the car like that.

No Freakout for me.

I never in a million years would have suspected this but the noise was caused by both thrust washers falling out allowing the crank to move several millimeters while running. Noise has been cured with reinstalled thrust bearings but will never know why the thrust bearings fell out.

I had an 1800 once that experienced a thrust washer falling out...driving symptom prior to checking play was an annoying metallic sound of the flywheel touching the lower dust shield under certain load conditions. I could imagine clutch engagement being one of the load conditions. Nice you found it!

Another piece of the puzzle, the noise I was getting was a very sheet metal being rubbed on sound but just could not figure out why I only heard it when stepping on the clutch, now I realize from your post the sound source of the flywheel hitting the sheet metal shroud is exactly the type of noise I heard. Thanks for adding that bit to my puzzle.
