I most definitely am NOT doing a Kawasaki build.

This is a '74 Wagon TC... so it's getting a fairly built TC motor.

I'm wondering on the rear axle ratios though.... it really needs a longer setup I think. It's got a 10/43 right now. Thoughts and availability?

When I got my TC sedan it already had a 2L hooked up to the automatic. But with the same rear you probably have the car was nasty at highway speeds as it was all revved out even at 60mph. That was the main reason I put the five speed in, not knowing back then about the various rear axle ratios. If I had to do it over again I would put in the 3.90 from a five speed 2L spider....it bolts right in.

When I put a 2L in my 124 coupe with whatever rear axle came stock in that coupe, first gear was useless with all the torque a 2L has and put a 3.90 in that car.

Soooo, put in a 3.90 or if you really want to cruise, a 3.60 from an auto spider.

That's what I was thinking. Now - replace the entire rear end or just the innards?

My dad had a '74 TC Special wagon that he bought right after I bought my '73 spider, but I don't know much about them. If it has the same rear differential as the spider, just drop in one of the new 3.9 pumpkins. I have come to loathe the '79 spider rear ends, you never know what you're getting.
45 years with a spider, that's a long time
Restoring the '79 for the second time, you're never finished ;)

I can not imagine the differential is any different than one from any other pre-78 124.

Aye - I’m thinking of simply swapping in the internals. I’m suspicious that the spring mounts are different - so it’s not a straight swap of the entire thing. I think I’ve got a LSD on the shelf too....

Ok - wagon braintrust..... I had completely forgotten I’ve got a parts car ‘83..... could I transplant the third member and panhard from that to the wagon?

And Carl - according to the ‘74 tech manual - the wagon diff is longer than the sedan!

I never got around to swapping rear ends on my sedan but I bet a spider rear axle just bolts right in. I did this to a Brave once to get rear disc brakes.

only caveat for the wagon is it has a different shock configuration, but my bet is that is an external difference only. I SHOULD know this, but i've been too busy learning about construction instead lately.
