Darn it! There’s always something to do.... the rear lower trunk lip is NLA. This is where having a real expert available is useful... fabricated piece for the rear. Rust all cut out, and plenty of rust killer and sealant added.

While the back end is receiving attention.... remove all the clunky license place lights, and reverse light fixing... smoothly does it! To make the trunk even smoother than the original wagons, intending to use license plate bolts that have a) down lighters for the plate, and b) high intensity LEDs on the tip that can be wired into the brake lights for a center brake light.... actually - that might not be a terrible idea for spiders....

If it makes you feel any better, almost every wagon I've owned over the years has required sheet metal work in the rear end regardless of the condition of the other sheet metal. The drains in and around the tailgate are never as well thought out as they should be. So the bottom seam of the tailgate or hatch is always the first place for perforation.

The rear bumpers are frequently cut down in the center to allow easier loading. The reduced height also allows more minor parking damage. Also drivers tend to misjudge where the tail of a wagon ends when they are backing, which adds to minor damage. This was true of my 1960 Studebaker Lark and is just as true of my 2017 Grand Caravan.

It makes me marginally feel better.

Honestly - I knew this one wasn’t in great shape..... but I also knew I wanted a TC..... and there really wasn’t many of them when new!

WOW - so much work !!!
Likely mine is not that bad.
But it looks like you're almost done.
Funny , but I have Biturbo wheels too , and I was thinking about using them on my wagon as well.
The 21011 front panel , was it your choice , or you just couldn't find the 2101 panel ?
I also spotted few more holes on you car you may want to delete before painting it.

I’m putting round side markers in the front and rear. Little three LED versions, that have one LED wired into the running lights, and two with the turn signals. I quite like that look.

The holes below the taillights - I’m trying to remember what they’re for originally....?

These are the very wheels that will go on! They started off life with Chris Granju, until I acquired them some years ago. Having been powder coated, and run on our yellow spider for a few years - they were swapped for a set of Turbo wheels with my friend Joey (in the photo). He’s agreed a swap back for the Rotas.

On the front panel - yeah, the 2101 one was tricky to find, and I had found the other. But, I kind of like the wider apertures on the front. It might well work better if I locate a long oil cooler there, but I think I prefer the look.

Andy, I'm anxious to see the finished product. I bought my spider in 1973 and my dad liked it so much he bought a 124 TC special wagon the same dark blue color in 1974. It had a manual transmission and my mother couldn't move it out of the driveway to get her car out, so when the 131 was available he sold the 124 and bought a 131 wagon.
45 years with a spider, that's a long time
Restoring the '79 for the second time, you're never finished ;)

I'm anxious too! I like the Wagon more than the Sedan I think.... and it's definitely got more practicality. Plus - Mr Granju gave me a helper spring he had sitting around to put between the diff pumpkin and the floor!

Hey, if the Familiare family keeps growing, we will end up needing someone to reproduce those helper springs!

Oh, and along that vein, rear shocks is a parts outlier for the wonderful 124/124Sport interchangeability with these. Did you locate a rear shock that would be a suitable match for front Konis?

Yep - there's a KYB performance set that seems to work pretty well. I'll have to look them up - but believe they might be a crossover with the 238 rear as well....
