Well, it's creative, I guess...

I thought I was close to seeing it all, but apparently I still have work to do. Yes, that is a quarter that someone (not me) used to plug up the back of the speedometer drive housing on my '71 transmission.

I found a nickle in the rear oil passageway of a block once. It sealed the passageway and was held in with spot welds. Whatever work(ed) I guess. Was replaced after it blew out with a bolt (tapped the passageway).

Had a TC cylinder head once, that on disassembly had a bit of a sardine can in addition to a shim under one of the cam buckets …

Not to devalue your discovery but that is actually its a Jefferson nickel, not a Washington quarter, and no it is not a "plug nickel".

Ahh, I like your brand of humor, and thanks for the correction! It seemed too large in diameter for a nickel, and too small for a quarter, but it initially looked like whoever did this machined down the serrated edges of a quarter until it fit.

But I see now that it is a nickel. The "orangey" color is probably the remaining sealant that was smeared over it. Funny, I've had this car since 1987 and never noticed the "plug nickel", but then again, the transmission has been pretty much covered in oil and dirt... It has been a parts car, but since it's still pretty much all there, I decided, what the heck, I'll go ahead and fix it up and maybe drive it once again.
