78 1800 Spider

Post by bartigue » Fri Nov 11, 2016 3:57 pm

My friend Charlie Hughes, who should be joining here soon, is having this delivered to my house today for a tune-up. He bought it this morning from Steve Wagner, a friend in Baton Rouge. We're going to change the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, hoses, wires and plugs this week before he drives it back home in Charlotte.

This is a 78 1800 with a Spider 2000 engine and the whole set of Bayless hop-up parts from the 80s catalogs - HC pistons, alquati 42/82 cams, 34ADF.

He will. We're handling the most pressing tasks here this week, but it needs a brake job, the wire to the hood replaced (it has a 2k hood on an 1800; he has a spare 1800 hood in the wrong color). I worked out the electrical gremlins last night, such as a Realistic amp with exposed wires mounted on top of the fuel tank and the radio run into the hazard switch. Had a nice moment when I finally sorted it out, got the original (and only the original) wires back together, and connected the ground. Everything works, even the courtesy lamp and illumination around the heater control.

The odd thing is the amount of work and money spent on the motor and it still has an 1800 dizzy, with a pertronix, but really? What was another $200 at the time for a marelliplex when every other Bayless performance part was installed in this thing!
