What exactly to do with this chassis? My old plum colored ’74 was restored, inside and out, after I bought it, to almost stock condition, plus alloy wheels, and mild engine mods. It was a great driver, and I don’t remember why I sold it... Should I go for that look again, or something different. I owned a huge bunch of FIAT TC go fast stuff I had collected for racing, so maybe a fast street machine? What color? Interior? Wheels? Engine build? Some thinking and planning was in order. My move to Denver resulted in faster internet (it was ‘99), so I started some planning by searching what other owners were doing with their 124 Spiders. I took my time. Then, in and internet search I discovered the history of the 124 in Rally Competition, and the Homologation 124 Spider Abarth Stradale model. 1014 examples were made by FIAT, with the help of their newly acquired Abarth operation, for FIAT to enter World Rally Competition. Rally Racing history shows that worked out more than OK for the next 20 or so years for FIAT and Lancia....

That was it. The history was very rich for this elusive 124 special - a highly desirable collectable then and now. My 124 for the street (stradale) would be the best replica that I could build to represent the Abarth Stradale. Could I do this? How well could I do this? What elements of this car could be duplicated, and what elements would be too difficult or impossible? More concepting, more planning, was needed.

My research came from multiple sources (internet, books, specialty magazines), and I gathered up as much as I could to study the essential “Spotting Points” of the 124 Abarth Stradale. At the time, the German website: fiat124abarth.de, had an extensive photo reference, which is now gone, or available for viewing by subscription only - I dunno, as my German is less than ‘sketchy”... Some of those pictures, which I copied, will be featured in this thread.

Having done considerable research into the history, and construction of the Stradale, I started in on the work. This phase of the project involved collecting the parts needed to build a visually faithful replica, and digging into the work required. The unique "Spotting Features" of this sub-model start with the fact they were produced in only 3 colors: White, Red, or Light Blue with matte black hood, wiper panel, deck lid, and rockers. I used a picture found on the German website to scale and layout the front features and needed bodywork.

There are 3 vents that are formed into the front facia for cooling to the radiator/oil cooler in the center, and brake cooling vents on either side. I calculated the opening size, and location, and cut in these openings, and finished them with hammer and dolly work.

The cars came equipped with H4 Cibie headlights, and either all clear, or half amber, half clear turn/marker lenses. Less obvious is the plain cloisone enamel grille badge, without stainless badge surround, and elimination of the stainless grille surround. Another front end detail is the single open 12mm hole on either front corner below the outside edge of the turn/markers. These are holes left over from the removal for the front bumpers. On some examples, there are small rubber snubbers in these holes, but on most examples are just open holes.

More Spotting Features of the Abarth Stradale:
From the side, there are the Stradale 4-spoke CD-30 wheels, the front fender FIAT-Abarth script and enamel badges, the euro front-only side marker lights, the tight-fitting Stradale fender flares, black mid and rear rocker panels (without stainless strip on top of mid rocker). There is a side mirror on the passenger side only, and there are about 3 configurations of mounting for this black Vitaloni mirror (some are door mounted, some fender mounted, and some fender mounted on a riser.

I purchased the Speedline CD 30 wheels from Bruce's, and they are available from A/R and other vendors. The badges are available, but the 'FIAT ABARTH' script is hard to find. I got the euro from markers lights from Obert's. and the flares from Guy Moerenhout in Belgium. The Vitaloni mirrors are readily available.

Spotting features from the rear view of the 124 Spider Abarth Stradale:

From the rear, there are license lights sourced from the 128 model, the euro yellow turn signal lenses, the ‘Rally’ badge, the bumperettes, and a double-wide exhaust tip opening. Less obvious are the grommeted holes for the stock license light wiring, and the inner mount tabs on either side of the license plate that are left over from the elimination of the stock ‘blade’ bumpers.

The 128 License lights are available from different sources, or from a FIAT hoarder... The lenses are available from A/R and other sources. The 'Rally' badge is available usually from E-Bay, or sourced from a 128 Rally (same badge). The gas cap is sourced from an 850 Sport Spider, but I didn't know that when I did my build, and used a flip cap for a TR3, sourced from Moss Motors. Nothing was 'shaved' on the factory Abarths, as they were pulled from line at Pininfarina, and converted at Abarth, so details left over from the stock 124 Spiders are visible.
