Gauge disassembly

The rings on my early gauges were rotted and I'm replacing them with new ones. In the process I shot photos of the gauges in disassembly.

These are early gauges - AS Spider, chrome ring. They are 103mm rings as opposed to the later black rings which are around 101. In order to fit new rings I'm having to work on the larger instruments a bit to trim off a flange that the new rings don't fit over.

Pitted rings - these were actually polished for several hours with no real improvement:

The basic "facing" components, the glass, ring, interior ring, and seal. These early gauges had a rubber seal in the ring.

Guts removed. Early gauge has a blue diffuser, perhaps they all do.

Thanks for sharing. While we're on this topic, do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for improving the brightness of the blue high beam indicator? The bulb in my '69 is the correct one, but the blue lens is so "optically dense" that you can only see the high beam indicator when the car is almost in total darkness, and even then just barely. It's been this way since new (and I know this because the car routinely failed the Virginia safety inspection in the early '70s when the inspector claimed the bulb wasn't working).

Any suggestions? Brighter bulb? New lens of some sort?

A bright LED can illuminate it better. I'm not a fan of LED light for the illumination but for the idiot lights they make them shine better w/o introducing heat to the plastic. You can easily rig up a "super bright" white LED to fit in there, or someone may make the bulb replacement.

Early gauges don't have the same bulb as late ones, these have bayonets.

Any tips on how to remove the bezel and lens? I'm opening a later speedo for cleaning but don't want to damage the bezel or risk the old plastic case.

Sealing them back up was a problem for me. "Crimping" the bezels back on made for a poor seal. I left the car outside one night in the driveway of my parents beach house and moisture got into the gages. They dried out but left water marks inside the glass so you have to remove and disassemble them to clean.....Ugh. I swore never to open them again until I found replacement rubber seals and maybe even new black bezels. Wonder if using an old dull can opener would do a better job (more uniform) of crimping the bezels back down.

The later gauges it seems the bezel on the larger ones is fairly easy to remove without too much damage to them. I'd put a bead of silicone in them, whatever residue seeps out you can wait until it dries and easily just rub it off. The smaller gauges I find hard to get the ring off without bending it.

Hey Brad, I bought these with intention to swap but kept my originals. If you need them for any bits they're yours. I picked up for almost nothing but don't want to throw away. lmk
