Seat bottom upholstery attachment

Post by kgfiske » Fri Jul 26, 2019 7:08 pm

Hi Folks,
On my 1982 Spider, how does the upholstery fabric attach to the sides and front of the bottom seat pan? It has come loose on the passenger seat bottom and I wish to properly re-attach it. I can see it had considerable contact cement applied originally. Obviously, hog rings were never used. I have attached a couple of pics of what it currently looks like. All help is much appreciated.

I'm going from memory here as I haven't done seats in a while, but I think you're missing the plastic piece that is the bottom of the seat upholstery. It is a long horizontal strip that slides into that channel where you can see glue residue. Looks like someone tried to glue it.

There would be three of these, one on each side and one along the front. The front one is usually loose as the foam has compressed over time. The foam presses upwards against the vinyl and creates pressure on the horizontal strips.

Brad is correct(ish). Three plastic strips (or one long one on some cars), which is stitched (not glued) onto the upholstery. Yes, stitching through plastic is hard.... inreuse the old strips and the old holes and do it by hand. The plastic is on the OUTSIDE of the upholstery, and wraps the fabric around it and then latches into the groove on the seat.
