165HR13 / 185/70R13 Kumho Tires

Post by bartigue » Thu Apr 04, 2019 6:35 pm

FYI Tire Rack is selling a Kumho tire for $71 (shipping included) that will fit the 165HR13 / 185/70R13 size of the original 13" steel wheels. I've had good luck with these tires in the past, in various sizes and on various cars. They aren't ultra high performance or anything like that but reasonably priced all weather tires.

My '78 Spider will need tires real soon. The fronts are wearing on the outer edges. By your post, the Kumho SOLUS TA11 - 185/70R13 sized tire, the Tire Rack is selling, will fit on the original 13" steel wheels as replacements for the 165R13 82T M/S tires that were on the car when I acquired it.

If this is true I plan on buying a set this week.

If your tires are wearing on the outside edge you might want to get an alignment to keep your new tires from doing the same thing.

FWIW 185/70 used to be my "go to" tire size for super-inexpensive (back then, about 1/3 the TR price) but decent Fiat tires for stock steel or alloy wheels. Heck, I probably ought to get another set of these for some car or another I own.

Any suggestions on a set of P185/60R14 tires? There are 3 different brands of tires on the 82 that I recently acquired and they are all toast.

Consider 185/65-14 tires

Post by rridge » Mon Jul 08, 2019 5:37 pm

Kelly,

The General Altimx RT43 is well reviewed. Tire Rack has them for $70.99. You might also consider going up a click in size to a 185/65.
The 185/60-14's tend to run a bit short in the sidewall. I usually go up to a 65 sidewall which adds 8/10ths of an inch to the tire diameter and cuts the rpm per mile from 915 to 884 in this particular tire. You also pick up half an inch in tread width. The trade off is the larger tire has a lower speed rating (115 vs 149mph) and is heavier (16 vs 15lb). Tire Rack has the RT43 in 185/65-14 for $67.99. You will also find a much wider choice of tires in this slightly larger size.

Walmart's website had some P185/65/R14 tires listed for something like $27 a piece!
