Sigh! This reminds me of the $150 TC I bought in 1986 in Alabama. It had the automatic transmission in it, so I didn't value it that much at first, but I found out that Fiat, not knowing much about automatics had GM do a good job in matching a torque converter on the TH180 and its owner's manual act...

Since you note that hard vertical bumps initiate the problem and a torque reversal temporarily alleviates it, I recommend also taking a look at the engine and transmission isolators in addition to looking at the usual suspects (giubo, pillow block, etc.)
