Re: How to preserve plastic dash

40+ years in the plastics business and 40+ years with Fiat spiders. If you don't want your new old dash to crack, keep it in a dark, cool, dry place. UV and heat are your enemy. Other than that, a high quality "protectant" will help keep plasticizers in. I'm not aware of any magic. After burning thr...

Re: Now for the rear end

I very recently rebuilt one of the old style rear ends to go into my '79 spider. If the hogshead from the black one doesn't leak near the drive shaft, pull it and use it on the other rear end. Once the axels are out, you've done most of the hard work, just go ahead and replace the bearings, ultimate...

Re: Rear end noise

Jody, based on tire size alone there isn't much difference, about 0.3 mph. Something else is responsible for your speed difference. Maybe there was a speedo swap, or tranny swap, I think different years had different drive gears for the speedometer. I think If it was the rear end, there would be mor...

Re: brake upgrade complete, the saga

Richard, those are some words of wisdom. I'm very particular about what goes in/on my spider, some new parts are fine and others not so much. Some parts can be rebuilt by an amateur and others, well not so much. The ground is definitely further away than it used to be. I've had other old sports cars...

Re: To weld or "glass"

Carl, if you decide on glass, and this is in no way an endorsement for glassing the floor, use epoxy resin, not polyester. Eons ago I glassed some rust on my XK140 roadster, I'm sure the guy that bought it imeadiately cut it out and welded in new metal, but I didn't have a welder.

Re: Rear end noise

Jody, the 3.9:1 that AR has is the same gearing that is in the new style rear end in the spider 2000. Stock on the '74 would have been the 4.3:1. The 3.9 would lower RPMs on the highway. The 4.3:1 used to be available as a new pumpkin, I'm not sure if it still is. This is a fairly easy r&r, unless y...

Re: Upper and lower ball joints the same?

Yes they do, I've got a Moog box with the right part number and it's not even a Fiat ball joint.

Re: Early radio blanking plate

Brad, I never put a radio in my '73 spider, so I know the blanking plate is in the radio console. If I run across it I'll let you know.

Re: 1974 124 Wagon TC Restoration

My dad had a '74 TC Special wagon that he bought right after I bought my '73 spider, but I don't know much about them. If it has the same rear differential as the spider, just drop in one of the new 3.9 pumpkins. I have come to loathe the '79 spider rear ends, you never know what you're getting.

Re: Wildly overpriced but fairly original 79 for sale

It's not quite completely stock, but there are many good pictures of a reasonably well preserved and original spider. Someday someone will appreciate those detailed pictures, other than they won't know the carpet has been replaced with some crap, and what happened to the front spoiler and pan that a...
