I once installed control arms incorrectly with similar results. Left and right are similar, but not interchangeable.

The early plastic canisters can be refurbished. Are you sure you don't have an electrical pushbutton switch mounted under the dash? This emissions device presses against a tab on the clutch pedal, about halfway up.
