The early plastic canisters can be refurbished. Are you sure you don't have an electrical pushbutton switch mounted under the dash? This emissions device presses against a tab on the clutch pedal, about halfway up.

Make sure whatever testing company you use provides quantitative results. I bought a kit off Amazon years ago, and the "results" returned were merely pass/fail. The big benefit in oil testing is the ability to evaluate levels from test-to-test.

Yes. Contaminants will get in to the cylinder as well. Take the car (along with the turkey baster and a plastic bag) to your local self-serve car wash and clean the engine and bay. The bag goes over the distributor.
